A drunk driver running away from a car crash where an off-duty police officer died was chased down and tackled to the ground by a bystander, and it was caught on video.
Euless Police Detective Alex Cervantes was killed when Dylan Molina ran a red light in November 2021 and crashed his rented Jeep into the sedan Cervantes was driving. The officer’s wife was sitting in the passenger seat and his two young children were sitting in the back seat. They survived the crash but were injured.
Video of the incident was just released on Wednesday.
The video showed bystanders reacting to the car accident before Molina, who appears confused, tries to run away.
A bystander chases him down before Molina falls and appears to hit his head on landscaping cement blocks.
“You stay right there, mother f***er! You see what you did?!” the good Samaritan said to him.
Here’s the video with explicit language:
Investigators said that the man had been drinking at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop before the crash and was served eight double vodka Red Bull drinks in the span of about three hours before he left the bar.
Molina was initially charged with intoxication manslaughter and three counts of aggravated assault. He later took a plea deal and pleaded guilty to intoxication manslaughter.
Cala Richardson, the 26-year-old bartender who served Molina, has been charged with a misdemeanor for allegedly over-serving him alcohol.
Security video obtained by police showed the man clearly stumbling in the bar before leaving.
Molina was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Priscilla Cervantes responded to the sentence in an interview with KDFW-TV.
“It’s not gonna bring Alex back, but at least he’s locked behind bars and not able to hurt another family like he did ours,” she said.
One American dies from a drunken driving incident every 52 minutes on average, or about 10,000 fatalities every year in the U.S.
