It’s a black Friday for nearly half of employees at Twitter.
The mostly liberal staff are bracing for a jobs bloodbath as Elon Musk looks set to cull 3,700 workers around the world following his dramatic $44 billion takeover.
Musk will be cutting around half of the workforce, with staff at the social media giant set to discover their fates at 9am PST.
Those in the San Francisco building are anxiously waiting for an email with the subject ‘Your Role at Twitter’ to drop into their inboxes by 9am PST today, while those in New York will find out their fates at 12pm.
Members of staff have reported being logged out of their work accounts and locked out of laptops while the company sealed offices for all of its employees, as Elon Musk began to make sweeping layoffs on Friday.

After assuming control as ‘Chief Twit,’ the billionaire immediately fired several top-level employees including CEO Parag Agrawal and censorship queen Vijaya Gadde — who banned Donald Trump from the platform, and interfered in the 2020 election by censoring all mentions of the Hunter Biden laptop story just weeks before the election.
As Reuters reported, Musk fired the top executives “for cause” to avoid paying out their golden parachutes. According to the report, he continued the layoffs over the weekend while directors were asked to make lists of potential employees to be laid off.
According to the source, the plans are still subject to change, and one option being considered is a two-month severance package for terminated employees. Sources told the outlet that senior personnel on the product teams were ordered to cut 50 percent of their staff in an effort to reduce costs.
Musk has now declared himself the “Twitter Complaint Hotline Operator” and will establish a return-to-office policy for the company’s San Francisco headquarters employees — a reversal of Twitter’s current policy that allows workers to work from anywhere.
Offices in the UK and US have been shut down for the day by Musk, who warned employees that their buildings would be locked and all staff badge access will be suspended in order ‘to help ensure the safety of each employee as well as Twitter systems and customer data.’

In an effort to place Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce on Friday. We recognize that this will impact a number of individuals who have made valuable contributions to Twitter, but this action is unfortunately necessary to ensure the company’s success moving forward.
AdvertisementGiven the nature of our distributed workforce and our desire to inform impacted individuals as quickly as possible, communications for this process will take place via email. By 9AM PST on Friday Nov. 4th, everyone will receive an individual email with the subject line: Your Role at Twitter. Please check your email, including your spam folder.
– If your employment is not impacted, you will receive a notification via your Twitter email.
– If your employment is impacted, you will receive a notification with next steps via your personal email.
– If you do not receive an email from twitter-hr@ by 5PM PST on Friday Nov. 4th, please email peoplequestions@twitter.com.
To help ensure the safety of each employee as well as Twitter systems and customer data, our offices will be temporarily closed and all badge access will be suspended. If you are in an office or on your way to an office, please return home.
